First Responders Act Immediately
ShelterBox representative Tim Hedges reported on Tuesday: So far,
  • International Red Cross has released 250,000 Swiss francs from their Disaster Relief Fund to support the efforts of the Bahamas Red Cross.
  • Bahamas Red Cross are planning to support 500 families with emergency shelter support, including tarpaulins, blankets, and kitchen sets from stocks prepositioned in country. They are also planning to support these families with unconditional cash grants to help them rebuild and recover. It should be noted this is all just planned activity at the moment, and exact numbers might be different.
  • IFRC also deployed a disaster management Coordinator to the Bahamas ahead of Dorian making landfall.
  • The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) have deployed a team to support the response.
  • A British Royal Navy, RFA Mounts Bay arrived in the Bahamas on 2 September carrying aid (including carriers, hygiene kits, and shelter kits), building materials, a helicopter, and specialist transport and surveying equipment. The ship will be on standby and ready to help as soon as an official request is made by the authorities.
  • DFID have also deployed a team of 3 humanitarian experts to the Bahamas, who will work alongside the Bahamas Government and CDEMA.

ShelterBox has carried out some initial investigations around logistics and importation procedures with the understanding that damage to both communications and transport infrastructure will make detailed assessment difficult in the first few days. Rotarians in the Bahamas will continue to monitor and advise on current situations.
Dr. Farhan Siddiqi of Florida Advanced Spine & Sports Trauma Centers reports he is in contact with coordinators at Solrelief.org who are flying in supplies and support staff to Nassau. There are also nurses who are willing to go to Nassau or the outer islands for medical assistance if needed.
